Hypnotherapy for phobias
A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal.
Phobias are more pronounced than fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.
If a phobia becomes very severe, a person can start to organise their life around avoiding the thing that's causing them anxiety.Book an online hypnotherapy session here
Symptoms of a phobia
As well as restricting their day-to-day life, it can also cause a lot of distress particularly if the phobia stops them from doing things that most people find fun, such as family holidays.
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. for some people they only experience symptoms or distress if they actually come into contact with the trigger of the phobia.
But in some cases, even thinking about the source of a phobia can make a person feel anxious or panicky. This is known as anticipatory anxiety and is very common with phobias like public speaking.
Symptoms may include:
- unsteadiness, dizziness and light headedness
- increased heart rate or palpitations
- shortness of breath
- trembling or shaking
- an upset stomach
If you do not come into contact with the source of your phobia very often, it may not affect your everyday life.
But if you have a complex phobia, such as agoraphobia, leading a normal life may be very difficult.
When should I get help for my phobia
I often get asked when should someone get help with and overcome their phobia, and it really depends on both the phobia and the lifestyle you want to live.
I would always suggest that any phobia that has a negative effect on your life, or stops you from doing something you want to do, needs dealing with sooner rather than later.Book your first hypnotherapy session here
How does hypnotherapy help with phobias?
A lot of people are aware of hypnotherapy as a relatively common treatment for phobias.
There are several ways that hypnotherapy works well in overcomming phobias:
- Challenging the thoughts that trigger the danger response
- Teaches you relaxation techniques to manage the symptoms
- Allows us to practice visualisation of the trigger to desensitise the mind
