Hypnotherapy for panic attacks

 

The most common issue that clients come to me with is panic attacks. Panic attacks happen for a huge range of different reasons, sometimes they are a breaking point for very long term anxiety and sometimes they are a really sudden reaction to a new anxiety.

Panic attacks feel horrific and are really scary but it is possible to learn how to control them and develop techniques to make sure they don't happen again.

What is a panic attack?

This has been taken from the NHS website for panic disorders. Your anxiety is considered a panic disorder as soon as you experience a panic attack.

A panic attack is when your body experiences a rush of intense mental and physical symptoms. It can come on very quickly and for no apparent reason.

A panic attack can be very frightening and distressing.

Symptoms include:

  • a racing heartbeat
  • feeling faint
  • sweating
  • nausea
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • trembling
  • hot flushes
  • chills
  • shaky limbs
  • a choking sensation
  • dizziness
  • numbness or pins and needles
  • dry mouth
  • a need to go to the toilet
  • ringing in your ears
  • a feeling of dread or a fear of dying
  • a churning stomach
  • a tingling in your fingers
  • feeling like you're not connected to your body

Most panic attacks last for between 5 and 20 minutes. Some panic attacks have been reported to last up to an hour.

How can hypnotherapy help panic attacks

 

Hypnosis is basically a relaxing tool that focuses the mind. What happens when we have a panic attack is that everything gets out of control, our thoughts and our anxiety symptoms.

Hypnotherapy teaches you how to calm those things that spiral out of control and techniques to stay in control, even in the situations that have caused panic attacks in the past.

As well as helping you control your panic attacks we can also look into the underlying anxiety that has lead to the panic attack. We use cognitive behavioural exercises to map out your anxiety and give you practical things that you can do between sessions to manage your anxiety and build confidence.
